A fan cooled machine can be just fine at warm temps unless you push it to its limits. The FC engine does not put out as much horsepower as a L/C so trying to make it do the same thing as an L/C is bound to cause it to have problems. This is no different than expecting a 400 L/C to do everything a 700 L/C can do though.

The utility snowmobile is a heavy-duty sled specifically designed for work purposes. Utility snowmobiles feature a solid and durable chassis and suspensions, racks or other cargo solutions, and many work-related accessories. They are powered by a 550-850cc 2-stroke or a 600-1050cc 4-stroke engine, which propels an extra-wide, 20-inch track.

The fan-cooled two-stroke serves a unique need We've been trying to bury the old-fashioned 550cc fan-cooled two-stokes for the past few years now. It seems that we end up writing something about how this anachronistic powerplant no longer has a place in the world of high-tech, modern clean-burning, fuel efficient snowmobiling.

Overall the 550 Indy models are anachronistic at best with their throwback fan-cooled two-stroke engine and effective but simple drive. The value 550 Indy models squeeze a tall canister exhaust under the hood to quiet the air-cooled two-stroke. We may be in the minority as we like the Fuji-sourced 544cc fan-cooled twin that Polaris uses for power.

1. Cost One of the first things to consider when comparing the two types of cooling systems is cost. Fan cooled engines will be a lot cheaper than liquid cooled models. There are fewer components and parts, which helps keep the cost down. But fan cooled options do have limitations that might outweigh their cheaper cost.

Ski-Doo developed the new eDrive from its sister Can-Am ATV line and has expanded the eDrive concept to handle the all-new ACE 900 four-stroke. Ski-Doo's fan-cooled MXZ Sport 550 offers the most rear suspension travel at 15-inches. Arctic Cat's F570 combines older ACT Diamond Drive technology with the Suzuki-sourced 565cc twin.

The fan I used is a 9 inch engine cooling fan from JC WHITNEY 1-800-529-4486 {catalog part number 38KS301N}. This particular fan pulls the air which is needed in this installation. The cost of the fan is $59.95 plus shipping. The fan comes with a switch but you'll need some extra wire. This picture shows a modification to the air intake.

Surprisingly, you can still find fan-cooled snowmobiles on the market, which simply use a fan to keep their engines cool. Although both systems do a good job, they tend to overheat under certain conditions. In this post, we will discuss these cooling systems.

In recent years —okay, the last decade— the three, two-stroke sled manufacturers upgraded their fan-cooled engines to run cleaner and more efficiently. Most of these engines evolved from 440cc and 500cc twins to 550s or bigger. In Cat's case one of its remaining fan-cooled motors evolved into a 570cc, while a smaller 340cc version grew to.

The engine was a completely new design and became a prototype for the entire snowmobile industry. The engine is an axial fan-cooled design with the fan mounted at cylinder level and driven by a V-belt from the flywheel. The engine also has the cylinders "twisted" to each side to allow the transfer passages to overlap between the cylinders.
